The Contractor's Insulation Buying Guide

Everything you need to select, calculate, and order insulation for any project โ€” from a single house to a 200-unit apartment building. Updated for IECC 2021 and 2026 code cycles.

Determine Your R-Value Requirements

R-value is a measure of thermal resistance โ€” higher is more insulating. The minimum R-value required for any given assembly is set by the IECC climate zone for that location, subject to local amendments.

Find Your Climate Zone

The US is divided into 8 IECC climate zones. Zone 1 is hottest (South Florida, Hawaii); Zone 8 is coldest (Alaska interior).

Zone Examples 2ร—4 Wall 2ร—6 Wall Attic
1Miami, HonoluluR-13R-19R-30
2Houston, PhoenixR-13R-19R-30โ€“38
3Atlanta, Dallas, LAR-13โ€“15R-21R-38
4DC, KC, SeattleR-15R-21R-38โ€“49
5Chicago, DenverR-20โ€“21R-21R-49
6Minneapolis, BostonR-20โ€“21R-21R-49โ€“60
7โ€“8Montana, AlaskaR-21+R-21+R-60+

IECC 2021 raised the minimum for 2ร—4 walls to R-15 in zone 4 and R-20 in zones 5+. Many states have adopted IECC 2021 โ€” always confirm with your AHJ.

Select the Right Product

Insulation is specified by R-value and cavity size. Match the R-value to your code requirement and the batt width to your framing.

Batt Width Selection

  • 15" wide batts โ€” for studs or joists on 16" centers (most residential 2ร—4 and 2ร—6 walls)
  • 23" wide batts โ€” for studs on 24" centers (common in advanced framing, engineered floor systems)

Facing Options

  • Kraft-faced โ€” vapor retarder on warm side; most common for exterior walls in zones 3+
  • Unfaced โ€” no vapor retarder; used in attics (where you don't want vapor barriers) and for fire-blocking requirements
  • FSK (Foil Scrim Kraft) โ€” radiant barrier facing; used in hot climates (zones 1โ€“2) to reduce radiant heat gain

Fiberglass or Mineral Wool?

For the majority of assemblies โ€” exterior walls, attic floors, floors over unconditioned spaces โ€” fiberglass is the correct choice. Mineral wool is required when the assembly has fire-resistance or high-STC requirements.

Use Fiberglass When:
  • Standard exterior walls
  • Attic floor insulation
  • Floors over crawl spaces
  • Interior partition walls (no fire/STC spec)
  • Energy code compliance is the primary driver
Use Mineral Wool When:
  • IBC fire-rated party walls
  • Hotel corridor walls
  • Apartment unit separations (STC 50+)
  • Below-grade / high humidity
  • Non-combustibility specified by architect or AHJ

Fiberglass batts do not meet ASTM E136 non-combustibility. Do not specify fiberglass for IBC fire-rated assemblies. Mineral wool AFB and SAFB meet ASTM E136.

Calculate How Many Bags You Need

The formula: Square footage รท Coverage per bag ร— 1.10 (the 1.10 adds 10% for cuts and waste).

Measure Square Footage

  • Walls: Linear feet ร— ceiling height โˆ’ window and door area
  • Attic: Conditioned floor area below
  • Floor/crawl: Floor area above the unconditioned space
