When code calls for a fire-rated assembly, the insulation must be part of a tested, listed system. Mineral wool is non-combustible — it will not ignite, burn, or contribute to flame spread. Standard fiberglass is not suitable for most IBC fire-rated cavity assemblies. Mineral wool is.
Mineral wool passes ASTM E136 non-combustibility testing. It does not ignite, does not contribute to flame spread, and maintains structural integrity at temperatures where steel begins to weaken.
We supply mineral wool specified in published UL fire-resistance directories. Your architect or fire marshal will reference UL assembly numbers — we can confirm which products are listed.
Most commercial party walls require 1-hour ratings; some require 2 hours. Mineral wool SAFB is used in both. The drywall configuration and stud type determine the final rating.
Not always by name, but non-combustible insulation is required in many IBC fire-rated assemblies. Mineral wool is the most common product used because it’s non-combustible, tested, and available in standard cavity depths.
AFB (Acoustical Fire Batts) are designed primarily for sound attenuation with fire resistance. SAFB (Sound Attenuation Fire Batts) are engineered for fire-rated assemblies with high STC. For IBC party walls, SAFB is typically specified.
