The attic standard for zones 1–3.

01

Code minimum in climate zones 1–3

IECC codes in zones 1–3 (warm climates: Florida, Texas, Southern California) require attic insulation of R-30 to R-38. R-30 satisfies zone 1–2 requirements and is a common starting point for zone 3 attic retrofits.

02

Cathedral ceiling applications

Cathedral and vaulted ceilings require batt insulation that can fit between rafters while allowing air movement. R-30 batts work well in deeper rafter bays where the roof assembly allows full insulation with a vent channel.

03

Floor and crawl space

R-30 fiberglass batts work well in floor assemblies over unconditioned crawl spaces — particularly in climate zones 4–5 where R-25 to R-30 floor values are required. Unfaced batts friction-fit between joists.

Common questions.

What's the typical thickness of R-30 batts?

R-30 batts are approximately 8.5"–10" thick depending on the manufacturer. They're designed to fit in ceiling joist or rafter bays with standard 2×10 or deeper framing.

Can R-30 batts be used in attic floors?

Yes. Unfaced R-30 batts are commonly laid in attic floor cavities, perpendicular to joists if supplementing existing insulation. In zones 3–4, R-30 attic floors meet the code minimum.

What's the difference between R-30 and R-38?

R-38 is approximately 30% more insulating than R-30 and is required in most zone 4–5 attics. If you're in zone 4 or colder, specify R-38 or higher. See R-38 →

Is there a minimum order?

No minimum. You can order 5 bags or 500 bags. Call for volume pricing on larger orders.
